A Lesson Before Dying the protagonist character Grant mind is pulled in conflicting directions by two compelling desires and influences. Grant knows and live the quote, "No body, but he who has felt it, can conceive what a plaguing thing it is to have a man's mind torn asunder by two projects of equal strength, both obstinately pulling in a contrary direction at the same time" in the story he is stuck between staying in Louisiana with his Aunt who raised him and care deeply for him or move out the state to the north to live more like a free black man with education should.
Ms. Tante Lou (Grant Aunt) influences him to stay in Louisiana with her. He stay in Louisiana because he doesn't want his Aunt to be lonely even thought he knows she's okay. Grant left before but came back. Ms. Tante Lou tells Grant if he leave he's running away from his responsible. Deep inside Grant doesn't even really care about staying in Louisiana he just scared to go. Grant dream of runaway and going north to a place where black men and women have more freedom and rights. This dream include is love Vivian. But this desire cant come true because Vivian have children and husband who she going through a spreadtions with. By law Vivian have to stay in Louisiana until the spreatation is over.
Grant desire to move out of the state is strong. Grant feels a black man cant live free in the state of Louisiana. In Louisiana white men control everything they readcuq and humiliate the black man because they have the power. Grant feel he is a Educated so he shouldn't have to with stand all the humiliation. Moving out of Louisiana would be the start of him getting his indignation and respect back.
Even though Grant have both opinions to stay or leave I think Grant choices to stay and live in the bliss of humility with Ms. Tante Lou in her house as a teacher in love with a married women. NOT FINISH RAN OUT OF TIME
